malena
i watched malena last night, and it broke my heart. i found myself tearfully recalling all my sympathy for those other women.
to me, it was a poignant statement on just how deeply dysfunctional the madonna/whore dichotomy is, forcing us into boxes that cause us to hurt ourselves and one another.
[SPOILER ALERT: if malena's a film you think you might wanna see, stop reading now, 'cause i'm gonna give away some key plot elements...]

miracle at st anna
i'm dealing with a ridiculous case of writer's block, so this is a mere placeholder.
but, in a word, spike was robbed.

who was gonna love me? who was gonna make me feel good?
i watched precious last night, alone, at the local indy theatre.
i didn't go in fully sober; in the absence of company, i enlisted a glass of red wine for backup. i didn't think it'd be personally triggering, but i knew it'd be painful. i didn't relish the idea of weeping--if it came to that--in the presence of a bunch of art school kids.
that said, one of the many things that stuck with me was mary's (played by mo'nique) breakdown when confronted with the reality of precious' abuse.
{SPOILER ALERT - descriptions of some pivotal scenes follow}

princesas
it's been quite awhile since i've seen a movie that broke my heart.
princesas made me think of many things...not the least of which were the issues surrounding sex work, the women who do it, and the myriad dangers they face.
i would try to deal with this on the sexy blog, but it's entirely too raw and too personal.
it may sound positively insane to some of you, but i can very deeply recall a time when this work was not stigmatized or demonized. it was a part of life, and it was protected. sacred.
i, and possibly many in my family line, did this work.
now it is a vehicle for depravity and desperation--not because these are "bad" or "fallen" women, but because balance and wholeness are not valued states of being in this culture.
who can sell prozac and narcotics to balanced, whole people?*
as i watched the story unfold, all i could think was, it shouldn't be this way. it didn't have to be this way.
i am thankful that i have learned and remember that lesson and came into this life with a different purpose. the temples are long gone, and it could have been deadly.
i think the same thing when i see real whores on the streets.
it shouldn't be this way. it didn't have to be this way.
and...
it could have been me.
*i had some issues with this film, but it did make an interesting point (blink and you'll miss it...) about the advantages to controlling people's thoughts/feelings around sex/sexuality.

here we go again...
more fear-based conspiracy programming.*
i support(ed) obama and still do, within reason. whatever the consequence of his presidency, a mccain/palin one would have only sped things up (can you even comprehend the world if he kicked and that woman was in the chair??!?)
that said, obama could still fk up. it wouldn't break my heart if he did.
i'm also unnerved by the shot of the black boys drilling when they're not doing anything that you wouldn't see at a black frat step show. i'm a lot more worried about the jesus camp kids. white privilege still goes a long way.
even if this film is absolute truth, obama could still have a wake up call. he has time--whatever the consequences--to say "fk the system" and encourage others to do the same.
hell, if i remember correctly, kennedy towed the line for awhile, too. he made a decision to go the way he went; he didn't go in with guns blazing.
i am with the idea that all these financial ups and downs are orchestrated and that a handful of old white dudes are running the show. the military is dangerously overblown, and our economy is a joke mainly because a few people with a lot of money said "screw the public".
but guess what?
there are more of us than them.
people are coming to consciousness.
not everyone forgot history.
and the military ain't what it used to be--at least not in people power.
i'm not saying alex jones is completely wrong--just that information can be disseminated without a bunch of fear-mongering and with far more than a brief nod to constructive, solution-oriented thought.
*full disclosure: i watched about 40 min straight, then skipped to the end. will watch the full film later and come back, if necessary.

i finally saw hancock...pretty decent. may not have paid $8 for it, but decent enough for a night in.
the history behind hancock & mary's relationship was a bit of a trigger. i suppose in my situation, though, proximity was strengthening. usually.
the spaces between love and destruction.
the true proximity of humanity to god(hood).
the immortality of love and the spirit.
(SPOILER ALERT)
(scroll past the blockquote if you're planning on seeing the film.)
(seriously.)
we've loved each other
healed each other
loved others
left each other
come back again...
on and on and on and on and...

Mary explains that Hancock is technically her husband, explaining that they were built in twos, and that they are drawn to each other over time and great distances. When later intervening in a liquor store robbery, Hancock is shot and wounded. Visiting him at the Hospital, Mary explains that when a pair of immortals get close to each other physically, they begin to lose their powers. She also tells him that she and Hancock have been attacked as a couple many times throughout history, most recently being in an alley in Miami 80 years ago. His skull was fractured during the attack, causing amnesia. To save his life at the time, Mary deserted him, allowing him to recover from his injuries. After her explanation, the hospital is raided by the bank robber Red Parker and two other criminals that Hancock had encountered when imprisoned. Mary is shot trying to defend Hancock as he is able to stop the two men, but is further wounded in the process. When Red attempts to finish Hancock off, Ray comes to the rescue and stops the bank robber with a fire axe. With Mary dying, Hancock uses the last of his strength to flee from the hospital so that their parting would allow her to heal with her powers.
